Towards the end of 2005, legendary track cycling coach Eddie B contacted Cervelo to build some frames for the Polish Track Team. Initially hesitant because of a lack of time, Cerveo eventually agreed to start a project with Eddie B to design and build the best track frames in the world. Throughout this year’s track season, Team Poland has used prototype P3C Track frames for their races, winning a World Cup and scoring a Silver Medal at the World Championships. Now, the P3C Track is ready for the big time, with several national track teams agreeing to purchase some for the upcoming season. The Cervelo P3C Track is a track-specific version of the P3C. It is well-suited for both pursuit and sprint events for the serious track rider.
For the track, bottom bracket stiffness is of paramount importance, and usually extra material (and therefore weight) is added in that area to beef up the stiffness. The Cervelo P3C Track is not burdened with any extra material, because Cervelo already engineers exceptional bottom bracket stiffness into the road-going P3C. So their first test riders concluded no additional material was needed. This allows the P3C Track to have great bottom bracket stiffness without the weight penalty usually associated with track frames.
Speaking of their test riders, Cervelo has been very lucky to work together with some of the best from early on in this project. Legendary track coach Eddie B and 2004 Olympic Gold Medal winners Stuart O’Grady and Luke Roberts have lent their hand along the way, and it shows in the results, as Luke Roberts recently wrote about the final version: "I gave the P3 a good hit out on the indoor track in Buttgen, Germany last Friday. It rode awesome, I was extremely impressed. It also attracted a hell of a lot of attention; many people said it was like a 2 wheel version of Schumacher's Ferrari."
Also borrowed from the regular Cervelo P3C are its aerodynamic features, which are further enhanced in the track-specific design. But this is more than a good pursuit bike, rider and steering geometries are well-suited for sprint events as well. In fact, in its very first appearance at a World Cup, the Cervelo P3C Track was immediately victorious in the scratch race. The headtube is short enough for pursuit events, and stiff enough to be used with a rising stem for sprint events.
